Peg board system

Our modified peg board system with the A-B-C divisions. Thirty-four players on the board on this night!

It’s been incredibly exciting to see a surge in participation during our badminton sessions over the past couple of weeks, with 34 and 35 members joining us on the last two nights. This is a remarkable improvement from the pre and post-COVID days when filling three courts was a challenge. While this growth brings its own set of considerations, it’s fantastic to witness the renewed enthusiasm.

We initially implemented the peg board system with the aim of ensuring fairness in court-time and encouraging diverse matchups, which it generally achieved. However, we recognized that it fell short in creating balanced and competitive games that catered to varying skill levels, relying heavily on the discretion of match pickers and availability of the draw.

To address this, we’ve integrated A-B-C groupings with the peg board system to enhance the balance and competitiveness of matchups through an objective win-loss filter. Although there have been occasional challenges with uneven matchups and logistical bottlenecks, we’re continuously refining the system to improve its effectiveness.

One of our primary goals is to ease the burden of organizing matchups and managing court time for our members. While the peg board system is relatively simple to operate without a dedicated organizer, it has its limitations.

That’s where eBadders comes in.

eBadders is an online badminton system that takes our current peg board system to the next level. It operates similarly, but with the added benefit of capturing player statistics at both session and historic levels. This data allows the system to create balanced and challenging games objectively, considering factors such as win/loss data, matchup history, games played, and individual game preferences.

The system requires a computing device with internet access to operate and simplifies the process of court-time and match management to just:

  • Entering players,
  • Entering scores,
  • Clicking “end game”,
  • and calling out the next match.

It also eliminates the need for level specific courts (ie. A-B-C) allowing for more efficient court rotation. Members can check in on their statistics anytime.

What do you think? Shall we give eBadders a try? With its features and capabilities, we believe it could significantly enhance our badminton experience and foster even more enjoyable and competitive sessions for everyone involved.

Oh, and it’s free! Free for the club to use, free for members to join.  Accounts are not required, but needed if you’d like to track your stats.
