Our club plays primarily doubles matches – largely due to court availability and number of players present. Playing doubles effectively requires an understanding of positioning and how to rotate through those positions throughout a game.

Do we play, front/back, side/side?  Yes, and everything in between!

Let’s try to break it down with positions first:

There are 2 positions:

  • Offensive (positions where the shuttle can be attacked)
  • Defensive (positions where the attacked shuttle has to be defended)

These 2 positions are represented on the court by the players as:

  • Offensive: Front/Back
  • Defensive: Side/Side

There are 4 possible combinations of these positions:

  • Offensive vs Offensive (F/B vs F/B)
  • Offensive vs Defensive (F/B vs S/S)
  • Defensive vs Offensive (S/S vs F/B)
  • Defensive vs Defensive (S/S vs S/S)

The video below covers the offensive/defensive positions, when and how to rotate through the positions during a game.
